Tester Experience

The Highlight platform guides testers from account creation through to participating in physical product and digital studies, ensuring high-quality on-time feedback. Once a tester is active, they receive relevant screeners, participate in studies they qualify for, and complete all required tasks directly in the app.

1. Tester Account Creation & Onboarding

  • Testers create an account using a provided signup link.

  • Immediately after account creation, testers complete:

    • Application questions (baseline questions to maintain community quality)

    • Profiling questions (standardized demographic and psychographic profile)

    • Note: these steps may differ for Custom Communities.

  • Testers who do not complete onboarding steps receive automated email reminders.

2. Becoming an Active Tester

  • Once a tester’s application is approved and their profile is complete, they become Active in the Highlight system.

    • Applications are reviewed instantly using Highlight's automated quality system and periodically reviewed by humans.
  • Active testers are eligible to receive screener surveys for studies where they match the profiling criteria.

3. Screener Surveys & Study Selection

  • Testers are invited via email to complete screener surveys for relevant studies.

  • Screener surveys are used to determine which testers match the project's qualifying criteria and include specific details such as trial duration and key dates, and by default check for quality, interest in participating, and availability to participate. 

  • If a tester qualifies and is selected for a

    • physical product test, they receive an email confirming they’ve been selected to participate, along with a note that more information will follow.

    • digital test, they will directly take the associated survey

4. Product Shipment (If Applicable)

  • For studies involving physical products, testers receive an email notification when their product box ships.

  • The product box arrives at the tester’s home prior to the start of fieldwork.

5. Fielding & Product Testing

  • Fielding begins according to the study schedule.

  • Testers receive testing instructions about the required activities for the study

    • Inside their shipped product box (when applicable)

    • In the Highlight app

  • All survey requirements, durations, and deadlines are displayed and enforced in-app.

  • Testers receive email reminders throughout fielding to stay on track.

6. Study Responses & Quality Review

  • As testers complete surveys, live results appear for Highlight customers in the Insights → Explore section of the project.

  • As responses come in, they are reviewed automatically by Highlight's quality system. Responses that the Highlight quality system determines are low-quality are removed Insights.

  • Testers who do not meet Highlight's quality requirements or do not comply with the study's timelines may receive a warning email notifying them that their status is at risk, or have their accounts suspended.

7. Completion & Reporting

  • Fielding ends when the study reaches its deadline or its target number of completes.

  • Once fielding ends, all study results are Insights are available for Highlight customers in the Insights section of the project.
