Segments

Customize Your Data with Flexible Respondent Filters

Overview

Segments in Insights let you filter your survey data by specific respondent groups, enhancing analysis in Explore, Scorecard, and Crosstabs. Found under the Insights > Tools tab, Segments can be accessed anytime to create, edit, or manage custom respondent groups for deeper insights.

Accessing Segments

You can access Segments anytime via the Tools tab or by clicking the link below any Segment selector in Explore, Scorecard, or Crosstabs. Projects start with premade demographic segments, like age, gender, and location, to provide quick filtering options and examples for creating your own.

Creating and Managing Segments

The Segments page lets you create new segments, edit existing ones, or manage how they’re used:

  • Create: Start by naming your segment (this name appears in dropdown selectors).
  • Edit/Delete/Duplicate: Modify, remove, or copy any segment, including premade ones.
  • Draft vs. Ready: Toggle segments between Draft (hidden from selectors) and Ready (usable in dropdowns). Validation ensures proper construction when switching to Ready.
  • Respondent Count Feedback: A real-time counter shows how many respondents match your segment as you build it, helping you avoid segments that are too broad or too narrow.

Tip: Use Draft mode to experiment without affecting live analysis.

Defining Segment Conditions

Segments are built with groups and conditions for precise filtering:

  • Each segment needs at least one group with one condition.
  • Add multiple conditions within a group, using AND or OR logic (the same operator must apply to all conditions in a group).
  • Add multiple groups, connecting them with AND or OR logic (the same operator applies to all groups).
  • Conditions can be based on:
    • Respondent Demographics: Over 25 profile attributes (e.g., age, gender).
    • Qualifying Questions: Used to screen respondents.
    • Study Questions: From within the survey.
    • Custom Criteria: Study-specific details (e.g., whether they purchased a product in the last 3 months).

This flexibility lets you create highly specific segments tailored to your needs.

Applying Segments Across Insights

Once a segment is marked Ready, it appears in the Segment selectors in Explore, Scorecard, and Crosstabs, letting you filter data by your custom respondent groups for more targeted analysis. For example, you could analyze responses from "females aged 18-34 who purchased a product recently" to uncover trends specific to that group.
